Welcome to the Howl Griff MPfree page. Every month we give away MP3s – from old favourites to current singles – to the world's best people: our followers. Every single month we will give away a free Howl Griff MP3 for you to download. It may be a classic from a previous studio album; a live version we think you'll particularly like; an exclusive extra track which didn't quite make the cut; or maybe even a work in progress from the current recording sessions. The new MP3s appear here on every month and are downloadable via our new Bandcamp store, free of charge (although there is the option to pay us whatever you choose if you're feeling generous). We'll try to put something new up on the first of every month. It's our way of thanking you for your interest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ January 2012: Countdown to Zero From our first recording session, at London's famous Tin Pan Alley studios. A shuffling psych-rock pleasure which builds into a heartfelt climax, it was a long-time staple in the live set – but, y'know, new songs come along and you have to shake things up... it's still a thing of beauty, arguably best enjoyed in the late evening in a horizontal position. Starting life as a story (called All I Got Is A Chain) about a 17th-century Cornish miner seeking a fresh life across the Atlantic, it was then refurbished with a completely new set of lyrics, chorus handclaps, a spare Rickenbacker riff from Griff and the first set of racked harmonies from Gary. It's possibly bassist Steve's favourite Howl Griff song, so he's always trying to get it into the set. Originally released on our Welsh-language debut, by popular demand it was quickly given some Anglicised lyrics, which allowed more people into the song's story: an ecological warning which mentions organic smoothies and a sasquatch. You don't get many of those to the pound. Originally recorded for the 2006 Hope Against Hope album and re-recorded to dazzling effect by Catatonia's Owen Powell for the 2008 Welsh-language album; this is that version, re-recorded with the original English lyrics. Originally recorded in English at Tin Pan Alley, then re-recorded in Welsh with Catatonia's Owen Powell and available on our debut album Howl Griff, but we went back to dub in some English vocals. Listen via streaming below or download free via our Bandcamp store Peace Sign by Howl Griff------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ August 2011: Hey Hey Hey Stompalong section, wolf whistle, cowbell and a memorable refrain - no wonder it's a live favourite. Has been known to the band by several different names, including Time On Your Own, Who The Hell Are You? and a fruitier version of the latter. Originally recorded in Welsh and available on our debut album Howl Griff, but we went back to dub in some English vocals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ July 2011 BONUS: Sunrise (official single) We'd already given away the demo version of our newest single Sunrise (see below), but when the lovely Lauren Laverne wanted to publicise the single by promoting it on her BBC 6music daytime show as an MPfree, who were we to argue? As a result, dear friend, here is the single for your listening pleasure. Listen via streaming or download (via the down arrow on the right) Sunrise by Howl Griff
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ July 2011: Sunrise (original demo) A sneak peek behind the curtains, but this is no badger-bum rough sketch. Fired by red wine and Tom Petty, Griff's original home demo features his own bass, drum (machine) and of course his impressive organ. The structure and lyrics were tweaked thereafter, but this was a surefire classic from the egg. You may have already heard it on the radio (or seen the video) and it's on The Hum album, available via your favourite online orifices – but here, have a free MP3 on us... Recorded by Owen Powell and Tim Lewis at Aeriel Studios in Carmarthenshire for the Welsh album (as Tyrd Amdana I); we then popped back to Tim's preposterously isolated studios to record some alternative English vocals.
